I am a nature photographer and have been packing my camera and camping gear on llamas for 35 years. They are reliable creatures that have made my wilderness photography more productive than if I’d had the gear on my back. My name is David Harding and over the past five years I have been employed by the National Park Service at Rocky Mountain National Park as an Animal Packer, specifically using pack llamas from Buckhorn Llama Company for operations on Longs Peak, the highest peak in the surrounding region.
It is no easy task to consistently carry heavy loads up and down over 12 miles of trail at altitudes over 10,000 feet, yet these llamas have reliably completed nearly every job we have attempted. On overnight trips in cold, wind, and rain, or on hot, dry, and sunny days they complete any task with as much vigor as you can muster yourself. They easily handle varied loads such as: search and rescue gear, oddly shaped trail tools, maintenance tools, solar panels, propane tanks, food and water, and have even removed many TONS of human waste off the mountain, all without a word of complaint. Well trained llamas such as provided by Buckhorn Llama Company are an invaluable resource to have here in Colorado. The memorable experience most visitors to Rocky Mountain National Park have would be impossible without the use of pack llamas, though most visitors likely never even see them.

He was our lead llama, but could also go on a trip alone. He was solid and calm about any new and different experience, and he got along well with all of the other llamas.
