BLCI rents trained pack llamas for a variety of business, recreational, and land management applications.

$90 / Per Day / Per Animal

*Included with each lease is all the tack and equipment required for each llama. Each lease will be provided with: a pack saddle and fitted pad, panniers, picket rope and stake, halter and lead, fluorescent neck band, a load scale, and grain supplement.

Llama Leasing Orientation

An orientation class is required prior to an initial lease and should be scheduled well in advance of the actual lease dates. This session lasts approximately four hours for the average person(s) with backcountry experience and addresses the entire process of packing and caring for llamas in the backcountry. We focus on your individual situation and address any special needs you may have, in addition to the foundational instruction common to every instruction. A maximum of four persons per instruction is advisable. Larger instructions can be arranged, but will require additional instructors and will take longer. Children are welcome as long as they are capable of participating in the instruction and focused on learning.

Drop Camps & Custom Services

We offer custom packing and support services for those persons needing assistance outside the scope of our leasing and guiding services. These include drop camps for those who don’t want to maintain or care for animals in the backcountry, transportation to and from trailheads, backcountry freighting, route consultation, and trail maintenance and construction. We are not limited to this list and are happy to customize a service to meet your needs if feasible.

Transport Equipment Rental

Llamas can be transported in a variety of ways. A pickup with a stock rack is the simplest and most economical method. Enclosed trailers are necessary for longer trips involving highway travel.

Requirements for Llama Transportation

Rent a Trailer
Buckhorn has a variety of stock trailers lease clients may rent. For towing a trailer, a truck or SUV with at least ½ ton rating is recommended for our trailers. Higher weight ratings are recommended for large capacity trailers. Our trailer hitches require a 2-inch ball and a 7-pin electrical plug in.

Use your own Trailer
We require tandem axle trailers with functioning brake, clearance, and signal lights. For towing a trailer carrying llamas, a truck or SUV with at least ½ ton rating is recommended for common stock trailers. Higher weight ratings are recommended for large capacity trailers. All client provided transportation and associated vehicles should be approved by BLCI at the orientation session.

Rent a Stock Rack
We have slide in stock racks for rent. The racks are sized for full sized standard bed trucks. The bed needs to be covered with a carpet or mat to provide a non-slip surface for the llamas to jump on or off.

Bring your own Rack
Racks must be a minimum of 60” high measured from the bed of the truck. The rack needs to be constructed of welded metal or dimension lumber and secured to the truck bed. These racks need to pass inspection prior to lease assignment.

Transportation Considerations

Loading the Llama
Trained llamas are able to jump onto the bed of a truck without the assistance of ramps. (The bed needs to be covered with a carpet or mat to provide a non-slip surface for the llamas to jump onto or off of. Steel truck beds are quite slippery, making llamas unwilling to jump onto them. Suspension systems raising the bed height of 30” may require loading from a bank.) A truck and rack is the most versatile transportation for trips that include rough, narrow, or steep backcountry roads.

General Information
Llamas are easy to transport and readily adapt to a variety of existing options. They can be hauled in a stock rack mounted in the back of a truck or in a stock trailer. They prefer to lay down when traveling, minimizing movement and lowering their center of gravity, increasing the ease of travel. The choice of conveyance is determined by a combination of factors including the number of llamas to be transported, distance and time required for transport, road conditions/weather, and transport options available.
